It’s all about DIY these days. I’m the first one to admit that I love to save a dollar. This post may be a little biased because I do flowers. Wedding flowers, specifically. But, I wanted to share some insight into a “Day in the Life of a Wedding/Event Florist!” and why your wedding day should not be full of DIY flowers.
The Design and Ordering Flowers
Sure, it’s easy to pick out a few flowers that you like in your color palette! But, it’s a complicated process to come up with the designs, all of the flowers that go into them, and the quantities to order. Your wedding florist (hopefully The Tallest Tulip!) will sit with you, design a proposal that fits your wishes and theme, and then order the correct types and quantities of flowers to achieve your look!
Processing
Once the flowers are ordered, they don’t show up at our shop arranged nicely into vases. They come squished in 10 or 25 stem bunches into 10’s and 20’s of boxes! Each stem has to be unpacked, cut, stripped of foliage, and placed in pre-measured water/flower food buckets. Then, your florist will allow the flowers to drink water and open the perfect amount to achieve the most beautiful look in your bouquets and centerpieces. Once they are open, they get placed in a floral cooler that is the right temperature and humidity level to keep them alive and fresh until your big day.
Arranging
Your florist doesn’t just stick the flowers in a vase! Think prepping containers, taping grids, soaking foam, and a myriad of mechanics that go into creating a gorgeous design on your tables, in your hands and on his lapel.
Rentals
Do you want to buy that arbor? Or those pedestals? Candelabras? Lanterns? What the heck will you do with them after the wedding day? Your florist has all of these items available for you to rent for a fraction of the cost of purchasing them. Then, your wedding florist (again, The Tallest Tulip!) will come pick them up after your reception while you head to the afterparty! The flowers are yours, but you don’t have to worry about all of these expensive containers and structures after your wedding and what you’re going to do with them.
Time
You have enough to do in the days before your wedding. Flowers are perishable commodities that can only be arranged a day or two before your wedding date. You have too much on your plate, too many relatives in town, and too much fun to be had to be stuck into the wee hours of the morning making 9 bouquets, 20 centerpieces and that precious flower crown for your flower girl. Oh, and we set everything up while you’re sipping a mimosa with your girls having your hair and makeup done the day of!
Let us work with you to develop a design that fits your budget. Every wedding is different and every bride has a unique personality and style. We pride ourselves on working closely with our brides to come up with a floral design that will be beautiful and showcase their individual style and personality, on their budget. There are so many factors that can be manipulated to make it work. This is not a time for DIY. Sit back and let us do the work while you enjoy one life’s most important days.
Xo,
Ashley
